Although glass production was already active before the year 1000, this transfer established Murano as the centre of excellence for this craft.

The second legend suggests that the colours were used to distinguish the different families on the island. Since many families shared the same surnames, the colours of the houses helped to identify them and simplify local nicknames.

Burano is also the realm of lace, a delicate and refined craft that has found its highest expression here. Walking among the lace makers’ workshops is a journey into a tradition that speaks of centuries of passion and dedication.
